Volbella is a filler from the well-respected Juvéderm family (a division of Allergan). It is used to treat delicate areas in the face, such as lips and the under-eye region (or ‘tear trough’).
Volbella is formulated with Vycross technology, giving it a smooth and soft consistency. It differs from the other products in the Juvéderm range with cross-linking; the process of chemically binding the Hyaluronic Acid’s individual chains in order to transform them into a long-lasting gel.
This allows Juvéderm to develop specific fillers with an appropriate consistency for use on targeted areas of the face.
It is extremely important to get Volbella treatments from an experienced injector, as the injections are more complex to perform than some other fillers.

How does Volbella work?
Volbella is formulated as a gel, containing hyaluronic acid which will add volume in the area it is injected.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance naturally produced in the body, and its most important feature is its ability to attract and retain a lot of moisture. A single gram of HA can hold up to six litres of moisture.
As we age our skin cannot retain moisture, as production of our own HA slows. Skin becomes dry and wrinkles more noticeable. Natural collagen and elastin production also slows, and the result is lax, sagging skin.
HA is used in dermal filler to supplement and augment areas of the face that have lost volume. Its immediate effect is to restore moisture retention to the area to plump it up, and revitalise the skin’s outer layer for a smooth, soft appearance.
What areas are treated with Volbella?
Volbella can be used in the tear trough area, the curved depression running under the eye, to replace lost volume and eliminate the hollow, shadowed look that makes you appear tied and old.
Volbella is also used in the lips, to add fullness to thinning lips, and to fill ‘smoker’s lines’ the little wrinkles radiating outwards from the mouth. It can be used to restore definition or to correct asymmetries.
Do Volbella injections hurt?
Volbella contains Lidocaine, an anaesthetic that lessens the pain at the injection site. You may also request further topical anaesthetic to make the procedure even more comfortable.
Depending on the area being treated, the injections may need to be placed quite deep, but your discomfort will be kept to a minimum as it’s important to remain still whilst the product is being placed into the skin.
Will I have bruising or swelling after Volbella?
Some degree of bruising and/or swelling is expected with most injectables, depending on the patients’ skin type and propensity to bruise. All minor reactions will resolve on their own. If there are ever any adverse responses to Volbella, it can be reversed immediately with an injection of hyaluronidase.
Is there any down time?
You can resume your normal activities after the procedure, although it is not recommended that you engage in strenuous activity; be exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat for about 24 hours.
You should not drink alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment. These area sensible precautions that are recommended after every cosmetic procedure.
Are there any side effects?
You may experience minor irritation, swelling or a mild itchiness at the injection sites, which should resolve in a couple of days. You should not rub or massage the area after Volbella injections, as you need to allow the filler to settle.
How soon before an event can I be treated?
Newport Aesthetics also advises that if you have an upcoming event, make sure to schedule your treatment at least one (1) week beforehand to give any bruising, swelling or side effects time to settle before you have to look your best.
How will I know if I am a good candidate for Volbella?
A consultation and examination of your skin; bone structure and facial musculature will help us determine if you an appropriate candidate.
Your expectations and concerns will be discussed so you have a good idea of what to expect as a result of your treatment.
How long does Volbella last?
Volbella can last up to a year, but it depends on the patient as everyone is unique. It can also depend on your skin care; your age and your nutrition as well as your overall health.
Fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth fine lines and deep creases, or enhance facial contours. Over the last few years, more than 1 million men and women annually have chosen this popular facial rejuvenation treatment, which can be a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or downtime.
How can fillers enhance my appearance?
While fillers are casually known as “wrinkle fillers,” they can do much more than just smooth out wrinkles, although they are excellent at this too! Here are a few of the common issues dermal fillers can help address:
- Smooth out lines around nose and mouth. (a.k.a. marionette lines, smile lines, and parentheses
- Enhance & restore volume to sunken cheeks
- Diminish vertical lip lines
- Plump & enhance the lips
- Smooth out a chin crease
What are fillers at Newport Aesthetics made with?
There are a variety of FDA-approved filler products that we use to achieve an individual patient’s goals. Each is uniquely formulated to have a certain texture, density, and injection depth, which means that certain fillers work better for certain areas of concern. In general, fillers are categorized by the substance they are made from. A note for your safety: always make sure that you are receiving FDA-approved, brand name fillers, which are only available through a licensed physician – yes, doctor!!
Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance that is already found in your skin. It helps keep skin plump and hydrated. HA fillers are typically soft and gel-like. The results are temporary, lasting 6 to 12 months or longer before the body gradually and naturally absorbs the particles. Certain HA fillers are infused with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during and after treatment. FDA approved HA fillers offered at Newport Aesthetics include: Juvederm XC, VOLUMA, VOLLURE and VOLBELLA. Others that are available elsewhere are: Belotero, Restylane, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Lyft (formerly Perlane).
Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)
Calcium hydroxylapatite is also a naturally occurring substance, found primarily in our bones. When used in a filler, the calcium particles are very tiny, almost microscopic, and suspended in a smooth gel. The consistency of a calcium hydroxylapatite filler is typically thicker than that of a hyaluronic acid filler, and the results will typically last longer as well, about 12 months for most patients. Calcium hydroxylapatite is also reported to help stimulate natural collagen production, and it is typically used for deeper lines and wrinkles. There is one FDA-approved calcium hydroxylapatite filler: Radiesse.
Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible (meaning it is safe to use in the body), biodegradable synthetic substance. It has been used for many years in a number of medical devices, such as dissolvable stitches. Poly-L-lactic acid fillers are considered “semi-permanent,” as the results typically last more than 2 years, and can help stimulate collagen production. As a thicker filler material, Poly-L-lactic acid is typically used to treat deeper facial wrinkles. The one FDA-approved Poly-L-lactic acid fillers is Sculptra Aesthetic.
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a synthetic, biocompatible substance that has been used in medicine for much of the last century. When used in dermal fillers, PMMA takes the form of a “microsphere” or tiny ball, that remains beneath the skin indefinitely to provide continued support. PMMA fillers will also contain collagen, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that provides structure and firmness. There is one FDA-approved PMMA filler: Bellafill (formerly known as Artefill).
Why choose Newport Aesthetics for filler treatments?
When selecting an injector for injectable treatments, give your decision the same level of care and scrutiny that you would for a surgical procedure. Even though it is non-surgical, filler treatment is still a medical procedure that requires specific training, knowledge and skill to ensure safe treatment and natural-looking results. You’ll want to choose an injector with an extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, a well-developed aesthetic eye (look at how they groom themselves), and a surgeon’s skill and precision.
Whomever you choose, make sure your injector has a proven background in cosmetic medicine as well as training and substantial experience performing filler injections. Ask to see Before & After photos of each potential provider’s patients. If an R.N. or physician’s assistant will be performing your injections, that person should be working closely under the supervision of a qualified physician, preferably board-certified.
What to Expect During Treatment
Filler injections are non-surgical and typically completed during an office visit. Your initial treatment will begin with a consultation, during which you will meet with your injector to discuss your concerns and goals.
During your consultation, your injector will evaluate your area of concern and review your medical history. While the risks associated with dermal fillers are minimal, you need to fully disclose your medical history prior to treatment, as certain allergies, skin and neurological conditions, or medications can jeopardize your safety or results. For instance, you need to tell your injector if you have been taking NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) or blood thinners, as these increase the likelihood of bruising.
Your Injectable Filler Treatment
Just before treatment, the area will be cleaned, and you may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area prior to injection. Many filler products also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which is intended to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. Ask us! Your injector will then inject a precise amount of filler strategically beneath the skin.
Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after receiving filler injections. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling, but these are temporary and should subside over the days following treatment. You will be able to go back to your normal activities right after treatment, but your cosmetic surgeon may ask you to take the day off from exercise or other strenuous activity.
How long do the results last?
How long the effects of dermal filler treatments will last varies widely, depending on the product used, the area of treatment, and the patient. Generally speaking, the denser the product is and the more deeply it is injected, the longer it will last, although this is not a hard and fast rule. To maintain your results, your injector can repeat treatment, adjusting the amount and techniques as necessary to ensure optimal results.
Hyaluronic Acid fillers tend to be the most temporary option, and therefore are often recommended for first-time filler patients. These will typically last from 6 to 24 months, depending on which product is used – the longer lasting products tend to cost more as well. For example, injections to the lips will wear out a little faster than those to the nasolabial folds. Certain HA fillers, such as VOLUMA and VOLLURE, are formulated to last longer.
Synthetic fillers tend to be longer lasting, as they are not absorbed by the body. They can be a great option for the right patient, but you’ll want to be ready to commit to results that will be there for several years—and take care to choose an experienced, qualified provider whose aesthetic style you like.
With the help of an experienced, qualified injector, injectable fillers can provide natural-looking enhancements to help you feel more confident in your appearance.
